Het Open Source Software-model (OSS) wint alsmaar aan populariteit. Succesverhalen maken dat bedrijven en overheid meer en meer in deze richting kijken bij de keuze van hun softwareoplossingen. Toch dient men het kaf van het koren te kunnen scheiden en moet men kunnen nagaan of het opteren voor een bepaalde open source oplossing wel de juiste keuze is. Naast het kostprijsaspect spelen er immers tal van factoren die in overweging dienen genomen te worden (bijv. maturiteit, support, community, …).
